Damage is not the only reason to replace a lock
People often start thinking about a new lock when the key becomes hard to turn. But the reason can also be access control: a lost key, a move to a new home, or uncertainty about who has a copy of the existing key.
If something is not working, the cause needs to be assessed first. The lock itself is not always the problem: the condition of the door or a mechanism that is not working properly can cause similar symptoms. An assessment helps you choose the work you actually need and avoid buying an unsuitable part.
The whole lock or just the cylinder?
On some doors the cylinder can be replaced on its own; other designs need a different solution. The choice depends on the model, the dimensions, the fixings and any existing damage. A part bought only because it looks similar may not fit your door.
Send the locksmith photos of the door and the lock in advance. If you know the model or manufacturer of the old lock, share that too. Compatibility has to be confirmed on site.
Before you call, have ready
- The reason for the replacement: a lost key, a jammed mechanism, a move to a new home, or something else.
- Photos of the door and the current lock.
- The model or manufacturer of the old lock, if known.
- How many keys you need in the new set.
- The address, so that a visit can be confirmed.
What should be agreed before the work?
Find out which part is being replaced, whether its cost is included in the agreed price and what extra work might become necessary. Ask how many keys come with the lock and about the warranty terms of the specific product, if there are any. Their duration and scope should be set out in written terms, not in a general promise.
How to check the result
After installation, check together with the specialist that the keys work, that the door closes freely and that the mechanism operates smoothly both open and locked. If you feel resistance or uneven movement, point it out before the job is finished.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a new lock before the locksmith arrives?
It is better not to buy a part before compatibility has been assessed, because a lock that looks similar may not fit your door. Agree on the call who will supply the part and how its price will be set.
I lost a key, but the lock works fine. Do I need to replace it?
There is no technical fault in this case, but it is a question of access control: if you do not know where the lost key is or who might have it, replacing the lock or the cylinder removes that doubt. The decision is yours.
Can I have a smart lock fitted instead of a conventional one?
That depends on the door’s design and the specific model. To learn what to look for when choosing one, read our article on choosing a smart lock.
